Orbis Wines

Orbis Wines is a forward-thinking winery based in McLaren Vale, established in 2018 by Brad Moyes and Kendall Grey. Perched at around 150 metres above sea level and just 10 kilometres from the cooling influence of Gulf St Vincent, the vineyard is one of the highest and coolest sites in the region, allowing for slower ripening and greater natural balance in the wines.

The 32-hectare property is farmed with a strong focus on sustainability and regeneration. Surrounded by native woodlands and remnant vegetation, the vineyard supports a diverse ecosystem of eucalypts, birdlife, insects, and native animals. This commitment to biodiversity, alongside certification under Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, reflects a long-term approach to soil health, water conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Winemaking is led by Verity Cowley, whose philosophy centres on the vineyard as the foundation of quality. Working organically and with close attention to vine health, the aim is to grow balanced fruit that requires minimal handling in the cellar. Fermentations are wild, sulphur use is kept low, and the wines are made without fining or filtration, resulting in natural wine expressions that are vibrant, textural, and true to site.

Orbis embraces both tradition and evolution. Alongside carefully regenerated old vine Shiraz and Grenache, the vineyard is planted to a diverse mix of Mediterranean varieties including Nero d’Avola, Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Cinsault, Fiano, and Garganega. These grapes are well suited to the changing climate of McLaren Vale, producing wines that are expressive, balanced, and forward-looking in style.

With fruit travelling just metres from vineyard to winery, handling is kept gentle and precise, preserving freshness and reducing the need for intervention. The result is a collection of wines that reflect both the uniqueness of the site and a modern approach to Australian wine, where sustainability, adaptability, and purity are at the forefront.

Orbis Wines represents a new direction for McLaren Vale, one that honours its history while embracing the future, producing wines that are vibrant, thoughtful, and deeply connected to their environment.

Frequently asked questions about Orbis Wines

What makes Orbis Wines wines special?

Orbis Wines wines are selected for their quality, personality and sense of place. We focus on producers whose wines feel distinctive, carefully made and genuinely enjoyable to drink.

How are these wines made?

Orbis Wines follows a thoughtful, low-intervention approach to winemaking. The focus is on healthy vineyards, careful farming, hand-harvested fruit, wild yeast fermentations and avoiding unnecessary additions or manipulation in the winery. Rather than chasing a particular style, the aim is to produce wines that honestly reflect the vineyard, the season and the winemaker's intent.

Which Orbis Wines wine should I start with?

If you're new to Orbis Wines, start with the bottle that best matches the style you already enjoy. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll happily point you toward the best place to begin.

Are these wines good for gifting?

Absolutely. Orbis Wines makes an excellent gift for anyone who enjoys discovering thoughtful, small-batch wines. Add a greeting card at checkout and we'll make sure no pricing information is included in the parcel.

How should I store and serve these wines?

Store bottles somewhere cool, dark and stable. Serve whites, sparkling and lighter reds chilled, and give fuller reds a gentle cool-down rather than serving them too warm.
