Muscat

Muscat is one of the world’s oldest and most distinctive grape families. Unlike many varieties whose aromas emerge primarily during fermentation, Muscat grapes are intensely fragrant from the vine. Pour a glass and you might encounter orange blossom, jasmine, fresh grapes, citrus peel, stone fruit, herbs and warm spice; all lifted by Muscat’s naturally exuberant perfume.

Rather than being a single grape, Muscat is a large and diverse family of related varieties grown throughout the wine world. Its many names include Moscato, Moscatel and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, while Zibibbo is the Sicilian name for Muscat of Alexandria. Each variety and growing region brings its own character, from delicate floral wines with bright acidity to generous, deeply aromatic expressions shaped by warmer climates.

Muscat wines can be dry, off-dry, sparkling, sweet or fortified. Contemporary producers are also exploring skin-contact and low-intervention styles, giving the grape’s aromatic fruit additional texture, savoury complexity and gentle tannin. Despite its reputation for sweetness, many of the most exciting examples are dry, fresh and wonderfully versatile at the table.
