Jauma

Jauma is the project of James Erskine, one of the leading figures in the Australian natural wine movement since 2010. Based in the Adelaide Hills, Jauma has built an international reputation for wines that are pure, energetic, and uncompromising in their philosophy.

Every Jauma wine is made from organically farmed grapes, with zero additions beyond fruit, no sulphur, no cultured yeasts, no fining or filtration, resulting in wines that are raw, vibrant, and completely transparent. Long-term relationships with growers in McLaren Vale underpin the project, particularly for varieties such as Grenache, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, which thrive in those conditions.

Alongside this, Jauma Farm in Lenswood represents the next evolution of the project, a certified organic site in the Adelaide Hills where James and his team grow cooler climate varieties including Chenin, Savagnin, Cabernet Franc, and Gewürztraminer, with new plantings continuing to expand the scope of the wines.

In both vineyard and cellar, the focus is on life and balance. Farming practices centre around improving soil biology, water efficiency, and vine resilience through techniques such as no-till systems, compost teas, and biodiversity. In the winery, the approach is as minimal as possible, allowing fermentations to occur naturally and the wines to evolve without interference.

The result is wines that feel alive in the glass, often juicy, textural, and full of movement, yet grounded by a clear sense of place.

James Erskine’s background as a sommelier and his academic work in agricultural science underpin this approach, combining a deep understanding of flavour, structure, and soil. His work has helped redefine what Australian wine can be, pushing beyond convention while maintaining a strong focus on quality and drinkability.
