Cool-climate silky Syrah with savoury depth

Hochkirch’s Syrah grows at the highest point of the family’s biodynamically farmed Henty vineyard, around 260 metres above sea level. Hand-harvested from 10 to 30-year-old vines rooted in basalt, gravel and loam, the fruit undergoes a slow four-week fermentation in the region’s naturally cool conditions, with a portion retained as whole bunches. The wine is then matured for 18 months in seasoned French oak.

Dark berries, liquorice and crushed violets meet black pepper, graphite and savoury charcuterie notes. The palate is medium-bodied, silky and finely structured, balancing depth and ripeness with cool-climate freshness, elegant tannins and impressive length. Beautiful now with a little air, it also has the poise and structure to develop gracefully in the cellar.

About the Wine

Silky smooth with dark and brooding fruit and spice whilst still leaning towards medium body. Tight tannins and bright acidity make this a super elegant and refined Syrah.

Both Hochkirch and Tarrington vineyards are dry-grown and on their own roots, vineyard work is manual, and yields are characteristically tiny. The Nagorckas entire farm is Demeter-certified (since 2003). They are known for their ability to leave the grapes to their own business: wild ferments, a little skin-contact for the whites, large neutral oak, non-filtering or fining and minimal sulphur the only addition.

About the Winemaker
John and Jennifer Nagorcka are among Australia’s quiet pioneers of biodynamic winegrowing. At Hochkirch, in the cool reaches of Victoria’s Henty region, the family farms ten hectares of vines as part of a diverse 280-hectare agricultural property. Established by John in 1990 and biodynamically certified since 2003, the vineyards are now managed by his son Christian. The own-rooted vines grow without irrigation on gravelly loam over deep clay and weathered basalt, with every task completed by hand.

Everything at Hochkirch begins with farming. Earlier harvesting preserves acidity, fragrance and finesse, while natural fermentation, older oak and low or no sulphur allow the vineyard to speak clearly. The resulting wines are vibrant, savoury and deeply textural, shaped by Henty’s cool winds and basalt-rich soils rather than cellar technique. Authentic and fearlessly individual, they reflect generations of practical observation, thoughtful stewardship and a profound connection to the land.
