Hochkirch Wines
Not many people are as closely connected to their land as John Nagorcka–and that is saying something!
John and Jennifer Nagorcka are true pioneers of biodynamics in Australia, and custodians of a very special piece of land in Henty. Quietly, and in their typical unassuming way, they work in partnership with their land and craft excellent wines from meticulously farmed, biodynamic vineyards. The wines are always a true reflection of vintage and site, and these releases are true to form. They hold the signature earthbound intensity that Hochkirch has become famous for over the last two decades or so.
The family vineyard (20 acres) is part of a larger integrated Demeter-certified mixed Biodynamic farm of 700 acres. The vines are on a north-facing slope, 250m above sea level near Tarrington in southwest Victoria. Planting is at 5,000-6000 vines per hectare in wide rows with high trellising, and the vines are dry-grown, hand-pruned and hand-harvested. It’s not the easiest way of farming for sure, but for the Hochkirch team, it’s the right way.
Involvement in the winery is predictably minimal. Skin contact for the whites is the norm (they're usually pressed halfway through ferment) and the reds see long post-ferment macerations. Aside from the necessities to ensure clean and pure wines, it’s a hands-off MO with minimal additions, resulting in unique and clear expression in the glass.
