2022 Hochkirch Blanc

About The Wine

Skin contact gives the wine a pale yellow colour. Edgy wet stone phenolics with sweet floral hint on nose. Surprising palate weight with tension between pronounced minerality and bright lively acid leading to floral and honey hints at the back.

Henty is Australia’s coolest wine-growing region and a place where aromatic white varieties thrive. Hochkirch’s Blanc is a delicious blend of estate-grown Semillon (95%) and Sauvignon Blanc (5%). The vines grow in the basalt-rich gravelly soils of John Nagorcka’s certified-biodynamic home farm.

The fruit was picked on 7th April and mostly destemmed (19% bunches remained) but not crushed. Fermentation occurred on skins for eight days before the wine was pressed to 500-litre puncheons for maturation on lees until the following January. In John’s own words: “Unfined, unfiltered, unabashed.”

About Hochkirch

Both Hochkirch and Tarrington vineyards are dry-grown and on their own roots, vineyard work is manual, and yields are characteristically tiny. The Nagorckas entire farm is Demeter-certified (since 2003). They are known for their ability to leave the grapes to their own business: wild ferments, a little skin-contact for the whites, large neutral oak, non-filtering or fining and minimal sulphur the only addition.
