Spanning a broad area that includes subregions like the Pyrenees, Heathcote, Bendigo, and Castlemaine, Central Victoria is defined by its diversity. The climate is generally warmer and drier than coastal regions, with significant diurnal shifts that help retain freshness and balance in the wines. Soils range from ancient Cambrian earth in Heathcote to granitic sands and quartz, contributing to a wide spectrum of styles.

Historically known for robust reds, particularly Shiraz and Cabernet, the region has seen a shift in recent years. A new generation of winemakers is exploring lighter styles, alternative varieties, and more transparent expressions of site, often with a focus on organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar.

Producers like Owen Latta, Patrick Underwood and Momento Mori exemplify this evolution, crafting wines that are vibrant, textural, and driven by a clear sense of intent. Their work highlights a more playful and exploratory side of Central Victoria, while still respecting the region’s deep viticultural roots.
