Silky, perfumed Fleurie from a Beaujolais icon

Foillard’s 2024 Fleurie opens gradually with ripe raspberry, red berries and peony, layered with warm earth, pepper and a subtle herbal note. Medium-bodied and finely textured, the palate is fresh and graceful, with supple fruit, gentle structure and a smooth, lingering finish.

The wine is made from organically farmed Gamay grown on a one-hectare parcel of mature vines rooted in Fleurie’s weathered pink granite. The fruit is selectively hand-harvested, fermented naturally as whole bunches using carbonic maceration, then matured in seasoned oak. It is bottled unfiltered, with no sulphur added during vinification.

Why we love it

Perfumed, silky and quietly complex, this is a refined expression of Fleurie with Foillard’s unmistakable combination of purity, freshness and earthy depth.

About the Wine

The 2024 vintage in Beaujolais is shaping up as a classic 'old school' vintage in the best sense — a return to freshness and finesse after a run of riper, more "solar" years. Kermit Lynch likens it to an acoustic set rather than a full stadium show, meaning less overt power and concentration, but real charm, elegance and precision in its place. Tasting this January, I found wines with vivid red fruit — cherry, strawberry, raspberry — lifted by violet and floral notes, vibrant acidity, and supple, gossamer tannins, giving the wines an immediate, juicy drinkability alongside genuine purity of expression.

About the Winemaker
As I wrote last year, it's an open secret that this is one of the region's finest as well as most consistent addresses, and followers of the estate won't be disappointed by the newly released 2018.

Jean and Agnès Foillard's first vintage was in 1981, but it was in 1985 that Jean began to work differently, influenced by his neighbor, the late Marcel Lapierre. Lapierre followed négociant and microbiologist Jules Chauvet in rejecting selected yeasts and manipulative winemaking in favor of minimal effective sulfur dioxide and carbonic maceration at comparatively low temperatures.

Today, Foillard remains true to that approach: His Morgon cuvées see some three weeks of maceration in tank before gentle pressing and élevage in used Burgundy barrels. Chaptalization is eschewed. He also gives his wines a little bottle age before release.

Despite his identification with the natural wine movement, Foillard has no tolerance for slovenly winemaking practices or flawed wines, and his bottles are typically models of aromatic purity and graceful aging. I regularly purchase these wines for my own cellar and warmly recommend them to readers.
