    2023 Domaine Moreau-Naudet Petit Chablis

    About The Wine

Not all Petit Chablis is created equal!

Moreau’s Petit Chablis comes from a single 2.5-hectare site between Courgis and Beine, just outside Chablis on the route to Auxerre. It has a southwest orientation and lies on Kimmeridgian soils (as opposed to the higher Portlandian soils on which most Petit is grown). Half the plot is home to 25- to 30-year-old vines, while the other half is somewhat older at 45 to 50. The wine ferments spontaneously in large vats of 32 to 100 hectolitres.

This really has some gravitas and charisma for Petit Chablis: it’s wonderful to taste what mature vines and quality, organic-focused farming can create at this level.

    Reviews

“Sourced from a large three-hectare vineyard in the plateau between Courgis and Beines, Moreau-Naudet’s 2023 Petit Chablis exhibits notes of peach, orange zest and honeysuckle. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and textural yet bright, with lively acidity.” 88-89 points, Kristaps Karklins, The Wine Advocate

“Mineral, cool – not large but it’s pure – very nice. Large in the mouth, mineral – not quite strict but almost chiselled. That’s a top PC for the vintage.” Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report

    About Moreau-Naudet

In the pantheon of white Burgundy's greatest talents, the late Stéphane Moreau stood apart—a visionary who transformed his family domaine by rejecting industrial convenience and returning to pre-modern viticulture. Moreau crafted Chablis of such texture, depth and sheer hedonistic pleasure that his wines felt revolutionary. A devotee of legends like Vincent Dauvissat, Didier Dagueneau and Nadi Foucault of Clos Rougeard, Stéphane embodied the free-spirited generosity that defines Burgundy's greatest growers. His sudden passing on the eve of the 2016 harvest left Chablis bereft of one of its brightest stars.

Yet the story continues with remarkable grace. Under Stéphane's widow Virginie Moreau, the domaine has not merely survived—it has soared. La Revue du Vin de France recently elevated Moreau-Naudet to two stars, placing it behind only Raveneau and Dauvissat in Chablis' hierarchy. This ascension is testament to both Stéphane's enduring legacy and Virginie's extraordinary stewardship, achieved despite three frost-ravaged harvests in her first four vintages.

Where generic Chablis offers crunchy citric bite, Moreau-Naudet delivers intense mineral freshness interwoven with pulpy, generous fruit—wines of profound personality that speak to meticulous farming, extended lees aging, and an uncompromising pursuit of place. As The Wine Advocate notes, these are "some of the most characterful wines to be found in Chablis."
