2022 Mansalto 'La Commenda' Chianti Superiore

About The Wine

A pure expression of Tuscan terroir, La Commenda is made from estate-grown Sangiovese with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Fermented in stainless steel and concrete, with 18 months’ maturation in concrete, it highlights fresh red fruit, supple tannins, and mineral finesse. Classified as Chianti Superiore DOCG, it follows stricter rules of lower yields and longer aging, giving depth and balance on par with Chianti Classico.

About Mansalto

Mansalto as a property was first established in 1310. The name itself is one of the the ancient plots on the property. Situated near Sienna just 5 kms outside of the Classico DOCG on the eastern border.

The property itself is 200 hectares with approximately 45 under vine. This was started 50 years ago with the previous owner who begun to collect parcels of land in 1960’s and 1970’s. Purchased by the current owner in 2012. It’s in the heart of a ‘nature’ reserve, lots of animals, very secluded area from other estates and viticulture due to sheer size of the property across the hills. Any forested areas are protected by law.

100% Estate grown and managed by Mansalto. The vineyards are in two main groups. 2/3rds are new plots, 25 hectares planted in 2013 and 2015. The last third are older plots, now 15 to 25 years old – located on the peak, SW and SE exposition. Due to topography the picking is spread out by 3 to 4 weeks. Sandy and rocky soils – challenging to work but give excellent structure to the wines. Average yields of Mansalto sit around 4.5 tonnes per hectares vs the Chianti DOCG of approximately 8.5 tonnes per hectare.
