Punt Road

Jarrod Johnson heads a dynamic, progressive young winemaking team at this James Halliday five star-rated winery.

Punt Road Wines carries the rich heritage of grape growing in the Yarra Valley, with its name honoring the historic Airlie Bank vineyard that once sat on Melbourne's Punt Road.

From here in 1860, Swiss immigrant Hubert De Castella acquired vine cuttings to plant 200 acres in Coldstream, producing wines that gained acclaim across Australia and Europe. This same land would later become home to St Hubert's vineyard and eventually the current Punt Road estate.

The Napoleone family story began in 1926 when Joseph migrated from Italy with dreams of bringing his family to Australia. After being separated for nearly two decades due to the Great Depression and World War II, the reunited family purchased Yarra Valley land in 1948, starting as orchardists.

In 1978, they acquired the historic Coldstream property, replanting much of the vineyard in 1987 with the goal of creating wines that reflect both the site's heritage and the Yarra Valley's independent spirit.

Today, the third and fourth generations of Napoleones operate 58 hectares under vine, growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, and Shiraz alongside apple and pear trees that honor great-grandfather Joseph's legacy.

Their estate winery sits at the heart of the property, producing wines that capture the essence of this historic site while building a lasting legacy for future generations.

Frequently asked questions about Punt Road

What makes Punt Road wines special?

Punt Road wines are selected for their quality, personality and sense of place. We focus on producers whose wines feel distinctive, carefully made and genuinely enjoyable to drink.

How are these wines made?

Punt Road follows a thoughtful, low-intervention approach to winemaking. The focus is on healthy vineyards, careful farming, hand-harvested fruit, wild yeast fermentations and avoiding unnecessary additions or manipulation in the winery. Rather than chasing a particular style, the aim is to produce wines that honestly reflect the vineyard, the season and the winemaker's intent.

Which Punt Road wine should I start with?

If you're new to Punt Road, start with the bottle that best matches the style you already enjoy. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll happily point you toward the best place to begin.

Are these wines good for gifting?

Absolutely. Punt Road makes an excellent gift for anyone who enjoys discovering thoughtful, small-batch wines. Add a greeting card at checkout and we'll make sure no pricing information is included in the parcel.

How should I store and serve these wines?

Store bottles somewhere cool, dark and stable. Serve whites, sparkling and lighter reds chilled, and give fuller reds a gentle cool-down rather than serving them too warm.
