Powerful, precise and charged with energy

The cool, measured 2025 season allowed the fruit at Tolpuddle Vineyard to ripen slowly and evenly, retaining excellent natural acidity while developing concentration and structure. Harvest arrived slightly later than in recent years, delivering Chardonnay with both intensity and finely judged balance.

The fruit was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak. After 10 months in barrel, with gentle lees stirring as required, the wine rested for a further four months on lees in tank.

Initially tight and coiled, the palate gradually reveals white flowers, jasmine and complex savoury lees character. Impressive weight and extract are driven by a firm line of acidity, while lime zest and tonic-like bitterness bring freshness and gentle grip to the long, focused finish. Serve at 12 to 15°C or cellar carefully for up to 12 years.

Why we love it

A concentrated yet finely controlled Tasmanian Chardonnay, combining floral lift, savoury complexity and powerful structure with brilliant natural acidity.

About the Wine

Winter rainfall was in line with the long-term average, maintaining soil moisture and supporting steady early growth, while a slightly drier spring created ideal flowering conditions. A mild summer with timely rainfall delivered healthy canopies and wellformed bunches, and a cool, dry lead-up to veraison ensured slow, even ripening and excellent acid retention. Harvest ran slightly later than previous seasons, producing balanced fruit with structure.

All hand-picked fruit is fermented as a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, in open wooden and stainless fermenters, with gentle plunging. Aged for 10 months in French oak, of which about one third was new.

About the Winemaker
Tolpuddle Vineyard was established in 1988 in Tasmania’s cool, dry Coal River Valley. Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith MW discovered the property during a spontaneous Tasmanian road trip and purchased it in 2011, captivated by its mature vines, gentle north-east-facing slope and remarkable potential for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The vineyard’s light silica soils over sandstone naturally moderate vine growth, producing fruit with intensity, freshness and finely defined acidity. Tolpuddle is a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia and produces only single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both of which have earned an international reputation for their elegance, precision and capacity to age.

HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION 97+ POINTS

"Tight and intricately detailed, as always, with bright citrus, peach and white nectarine fruits overseen by a mist of flint and struck-march complexity. Hints of grilled hazelnuts, almond butter, vanillin oak, clover blossom, crushed riverstone, crème fraîche, ozone, oatmeal and sea spray. Lightly textural, with a beautiful taut mineral line, the flavours precise and drawn out along its length. This has a tight mineral cadence, a touch of apple-skin pithiness, preserved lemon, nougat and a pristine, sustained finish with a flair of umami. This is a producer and a site that is in the finest of form. No wonder the French are nervous – once again, world-class Australian chardonnay."

CAMPBELL MATTINSON 97 POINTS

"This edition of Tolpuddle Chardonnay is a classic in the making. It has three key features: unforced complexity, an impression of effortlessness, and outstanding length. It tastes of iron, grilled peach, lemon, tonic water and nougat, though there's an underpinning of umami and a subtle flintiness in play too. It's al quite exquisite. It's all quite fabulous."
