This lively Gamay comes from the Pooks Hill vineyard in Totness where 30-year-old vines grow on sandy black soils over petrified schist. This site houses 6 different Gamay clones that go into the blend, including some Gamay de Bouze, a red-fleshed mutation.

In the winery, Anton pays a proper homage to what he calls “a more nouveau style.” This means whole bunches and semi-carbonic maceration in a fibreglass fermenter for two weeks before pressing into a ceramic egg for maturation. “It’s not large and luscious, it’s tighter and organised,” Anton describes.

"The merry-go-round arrives, get on and hold on tight as the wild ride of soif, swill, laughing, thrill, shrill, laughing, spinning out of control to the smooth jazz of pure pink juice. See the notes float from the saxophone, get off lye back and spin into universe of everything painted in gamay."

When we think of natural wine in Australia, one of the first names that comes to mind is Anton van Klopper – and for good reason. Operating from a relatively small estate in Basket Range, South Australia, Anton meticulously tends to his 14-hectare organic farm, which is home to four hectares of vines and a hectare of vegetables in Basket Range, plus a leased four hectares nearby in Totness.

Anton approaches winemaking exactly as you'd hope: the antithesis to mass production. His philosophy encompasses every stage of the process - from organic farming and meticulous land stewardship to hand-harvesting fruit, wild yeast fermentation, and zero additives. His commitment to purity extends even to distilling his own alcohol for winery cleaning, eliminating any need for harsh chemicals throughout the entire operation.
