Dry Riesling of substance, minerality and noble character

Domdechaney is one of Hochheim’s historic vineyard sites, named for the former dean of Mainz Cathedral who once received its yields as payment. In 1775, an attempt to irrigate the vineyard with water from the Main River encouraged noble rot and produced remarkable late-harvest wines, paralleling the discovery of Spätlese at Schloss Johannisberg that same year.

The vineyard’s deep, nutrient-rich soils combine loamy loess, river pebbles and calcareous clay marl. Their excellent water retention allows the grapes to ripen fully, while the limestone-rich marl brings mineral definition and gentle acidity.

Ripe honeydew melon and lychee lead into a concentrated, full-bodied palate with layered minerality and beautifully controlled freshness. Dry, substantial and complex, this is a distinguished Rheingau Riesling with the depth and structure to develop gracefully for many years.

About the Wine

Ample warmth and an abundance of mineral nutrients promote fully ripe fruit. Riesling wines from the Domdechaney site are thus known for their substance, concentration and body. They are also marked by distinctive, intense aromas of ripe fruits such as honeydew melon and lychee. Calcareous clay marl lends a stunning minerality and a characteristic but nevertheless gentle acidity. The wines need at least two years of aging to reveal their full concentration and aromatic complexity. This unique vineyard consistently produces distinctive, powerful and long-lived wines.

So ripe and silky, but also wonderfully fresh and bright, this has a great deal of underplayed power, Better than a lot of 2021 GGs! Vinified 100% in large neutral oak.
