Frankland Estate

Frankland Estate is a second-generation, family-run winery based in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, led by Hunter and Elizabeth Smith alongside winemaker Brian Kent. At the heart of the estate is the Isolation Ridge vineyard, planted in 1988 and farmed with a long-standing commitment to organic principles, sustainability, and respect for the land.

Everything begins in the vineyard. The family lives and works on this land, fostering a close, intuitive relationship with the vines and the wider ecosystem. Farming is guided by a belief that healthy soils and balanced vines produce the most expressive fruit. Through careful cultivation, composting, and a focus on biodiversity, the vineyard is managed as a living system, where flora, fauna, and vine health are all interconnected.

This deep attention to detail in the vineyard allows for a naturally low-intervention approach in the winery. Winemaking at Frankland Estate is deliberately light-touch, precise, thoughtful, and responsive to each season. The aim is to capture the essence of variety, site, and vintage with clarity, highlighting aromatic purity and allowing structure to emerge naturally, without excess weight or manipulation.

The Isolation Ridge site is particularly well suited to varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz, producing wines that combine intensity with finesse. The cool climate and remote location of Great Southern contribute to the freshness, acidity, and mineral detail that define the wines, giving them both immediate appeal and the capacity to age.

Frankland Estate’s approach is one of continual refinement. Over decades, small, patient adjustments in both vineyard and cellar have shaped a style that is unmistakably their own.
