High-altitude Burgundy with freshness and finesse

Bignon 421 comes from Boris Champy’s En Bignon vineyard in Bouze-lès-Beaune, its name referencing the site’s lofty position 421 metres above sea level. The cool altitude preserves freshness and fragrance, while the vineyard’s deep red clay soils bring depth and structure to the Pinot Noir.

Hand-picked at optimal ripeness, the fruit was completely destemmed and gently extracted in large oak foudre. The wine matured for around 12 months, with just 15% new oak. Fresh red berries lead the way, joined by fine Pinot spice and an energetic, refined palate. Bright and approachable, yet with enough structure to develop over three to seven years.

About the Wine

This wine comes from our plot named “En Bignon” in Bouze les Beaune. From 2020 onwards, it is labeled with the name of its location: “En Bi- gnon” and its altitude: 421 metres. The plot’s soil is very clayey and red. In Burgundy we say that red soil equals great red wine!

Its altitude of 421 meters is important because the plot is in a fresh spot, which is ideal to produce refined wines. From the vineyard we can see the pass of Bessey en Chaume (532m), highest point in altitude between Paris and Marseille by the highway.


Viticulture & Winemaking

Mainly traditional high density vineyard (8 to 10 000 vines per ha with Guyot cane pruning) and partly with lyre (double Guyot pruning). Grapes harvested by hand at perfect maturity. Vinification: gentle extraction, 100% de-stemmed grapes, in oak foudre (large barrel). Ageing: an average of 12 months, 15% in new barrels. 


Food Pairing

This wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif with friends but is also at home with charcuterie, shepherd’s pie or a vegetable quiche. Cellaring 3-7 years.
