About the Wine
2024 Single Vineyard release. Gentle Folk: The Pinot Noir at Scary Gully is one of the highest and oldest in the Adelaide Hills and sits upon a ridge of sandstone and quartz . The steepness of the site, and hence “Scary”, means there are often some serious farming challenges in wet years. However, the 2024 season was mild and dry, and although yields were low, the grapes were pristine, and the resulting wine is beautifully balanced, perfumed and pure, all hallmarks of a great season for the site.
Winemaking
Fruit was hand harvested with 80% destemmed and 20% remaining in whole-bunch. Open top fermentation with twice daily pump overs for two to three weeks, followed by pressing into French oak for 10 months, 20% of the barrels were new. The wine was then racked to tank for three months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
About Gentle Folk
Gentle Folk Wines was founded by marine scientists-turned-winemakers Gareth and Rainbo Belton in 2013, starting with just three barrels from a vineyard in the Basket Range. Today they farm five sites totally 9 hectares; planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc.
Driven by a deep respect for nature and a hands-on approach to viticulture, they produce small-batch, minimal-intervention wines that reflect the character and diversity of their cool-climate region. With a focus on organic farming and gentle winemaking techniques, Gentle Folk has earned a loyal following for its vibrant, expressive wines—from elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to more playful, experimental blends. Each bottle tells a story of place, passion, and a thoughtful connection to the land.
