Description
100% Syrah from a 45 year old vineyard which sits on the banks of the Goulburn river just beneath Mt Torbreck.
The vines are dry grown on a mix of alluvial sandstone, mudstone and shale with a high degree of volcanic material interspersed. The vineyard has been managed using
organic practises for the last 5 years and no herbicides or pesticides are used. This is an extremely healthy vineyard, In fact I had never seen such a high producing vineyard while at the same time having such high quality fruit. I’m sure the rich alluvial soils being so fertile in nature have a lot to do with this.
The fruit was handpicked and underwent a 10 day whole bunch maceration in stainless steel. It was then transferred into one 400L clay amphora were it spent almost a year resting. It was then transferred by gravity back to a stainless vessel which it was then bottled by hand from. At this time we added 15ppm so2.
The resulting wine has an amazing freshness about it and, (for a Syrah) it is quite light and vibrant in nature. It also has a wonderful softness to it at the same time which is definitely something the amphora seems to impart to reds. Silky I guess describes this best.
It is by no means ‘fruit forward’ but is quite savoury leaning with a great line of acid and a really tidy structure. A lot of minerality too. A beautiful wine.
