This is a wine for contemplating. It opens up slowly in the glass, but then reveals an array of flavours and aromas that are truly compelling. This is a lovely, expressive Chardonnay.

This estate wine is from a parcel of Chardonnay in the heart of the village of Puligny-Montrachet, planted by Dominique Derain in 1987, when he was beginning. It has always been in biodynamics. The soil is clay and chalky limestone. The grapes were directly-pressed and then put in barrels for fermentation and aging. It aged on its lees for 18 months prior to bottling. Total sulphites 20 mg/l. Certified organic.

Domaine Derain offers exceptional value in Burgundy, with 5.5 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards in Saint-Aubin—a hidden gem bordering the premier crus of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet at a fraction of the price.

Founded in 1988 by Dominique Derain (a former barrel-maker turned winemaker) and his wife Catherine, the domaine has been certified biodynamic since 1989. Their non-interventionist approach and commitment to natural winemaking has created a reputation for authentic, terroir-driven wines.

The domaine recently underwent a seamless generational transition, with longtime assistant Julien Altaber and cellar manager Carole Schwab taking ownership. Dominique remains actively involved as mentor, ensuring continuity of quality and philosophy. This new generation brings fresh energy while maintaining the domaine's established standards.
