It’s more than 20 years since Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer took over the winery in Gols near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, bordering Hungary at the eastern edge of Austria. Over that time they’ve pushed the boundaries of Austrian red winemaking, in particular with St Laurent and Zweigelt. Pittnauer are one of the most forward thinking, gifted and creative producers in Europe.
One of the best things about Austrian wine is the fact that almost every producer has a huge emphasis on regenerative agriculture. Pitti Red has a lovely wild nose of spice, flowers and earthiness.
The palate is fresh and plush with a great balance of acidity and tannin. Great with a chill or simply as it is. Have you had a lamb salad with feta before? Well, you should try that with this.
