    Radikon

The wines crafted by the late Stanislao (Stanko) Radikon and his son Sasa have earned a passionate global following among winemakers, critics, and wine enthusiasts. Known for their commitment to natural winemaking, the Radikons have dedicated themselves to producing wines without compromise. Stanko, who oversaw 36 vintages at Radikon, shunned conventional winemaking trends, preferring a more traditional approach inspired by Friulian methods from pre-1930s. This includes extended maceration, the use of large oak barrels, and manual harvesting, while strictly avoiding chemical pesticides, temperature-controlled fermentation, and sulfur.

The Radikon wines are known for their exceptional ageability, with long maceration periods helping to preserve and enhance the wines, allowing them to mature gracefully. Stanko's goal was to create "totally genuine" wines that truly reflect the unique terroir of their region. The Radikon vineyards are situated on a steep hillside in Oslavia, nestled between the town of Gorizia and the Slovenian border, benefiting from a south and southeast-facing aspect with the Julian Alps to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the south.

Founded by Stanko's grandfather, Franz Mikulus, the estate originally focused on Ribolla Gialla, a variety that Stanko continued to champion for its ability to express the terroir most profoundly. His parents later added Merlot, Tocai Friulano, and Pinot Grigio to the estate. Stanko took over the management of the vineyard in 1980, working alongside his wife, Suzana, and son, Sasa.

In 1995, Stanko began to revisit the winemaking methods of his grandfather, increasing the skin contact period from 7 days to 3 months and extending both barrel and bottle aging. He also moved toward a chemical-free approach, producing his first sulfur-free vintage in 2002. The estate’s vineyards are farmed entirely by hand, using natural treatments such as manure, copper, sulfur, and propolis (beeswax) to manage powdery mildew, ensuring that every aspect of the winemaking process aligns with his commitment to purity and authenticity.
