2025 Ochota Barrels 'The Price of Silence' Gamay

About The Wine

In the mid-1980s Sam Vigara planted three clones of gamay in the Adelaide Hills however due to unpopularity they were grafted over with chardonnay after only a few yeas. In 2013, convinced by Taras that gamay was “back”, Sam agreed to restore the plantings.

The first crop came off in 2019, which was then followed sadly by the catastrophic bushfires in 2020. Since 2022 this low yielding vineyard has led to the beautiful wine we have enjoyed since. The 2025 is a classic example of Price of Silence — medicinal fragrance with savoury spice and a mineral lithe palate.

In the Adelaide Hills, Ochota Barrels creates wines that honor the memory of founder Taras Ochota, continuing his vision under the stewardship of Amber, Yari, and Louis.

These are wines born of intuition - grapes picked when they're irresistibly delicious, guided by natural acidity and wild fermentation. Old bush vines in living soil produce concentrated fruit that speaks for itself through minimal intervention winemaking.

Following Occam's Razor, they believe simplicity reveals truth. The result: gorgeous, authentic wines with none of the nasties and all of the love—a celebration of place, season, and the human spirit that tends the vines.
