2021 Alkina 'Spice Garden' Shiraz

About The Wine

"A fascinating exercise every year in understanding the influence of different geologies. As per 2020 the base (83%) was Polygon 10 Shiraz (vines planted on limestone). Polygon 11 didn’t fare as well in 2021 so we were lucky to be able to include some of Polygon 1 as the schist component (17%). As per previous year the powerful clay based Polygon 14 was excluded. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic.

P10 was picked on 1st April, 11 days after P1 and was fermented with indigenous yeast and 60% whole bunches in a concrete tulip. It was basket pressed into neutral large format oak. P1 was also fermented with 60% whole bunches in concrete, with its maturation also in concrete until blending with P10 in Jan 2022 and bottling in April.

 The Spice Garden is a special part of the vineyard, uncovered as part of our work with Pedro Parra. Polygon 10 is always the central component, and with lifted florals, cool fruit character, spice and Barossa garrigue...there is a lot going on here. In a richer year this is complete and perfectly poised follow up to the nervy 2020."
