Colin McBryde had been nagging the Smith family for about a decade to get some fruit from their organic-certified Ruchioch vineyard in Polish hill River saying: "the opportunity to work with organic Riesling really couldn't be turned down." This is the second release of Ruchioch and the first to carry the name of the vineyard. While the vine age, elevation and soil profiles are all similar to Col's Polish Hill River source, Ruchioch is a very low cropping site. It produces a Riesling that has not only wonderful, pulpy mid-palate concentration and texture, but also the highest acidity that Colin has seen. It all makes for a lively combination!
De-stemmed and crushed before pressing, the free-run juice was settled, racked, and fermented to near dryness. Slightly higher in alcohol that the Polish Hill River--but also with more acidity--it's chalky, crystalline, and focused with a wash of lime zest, pink grapefruit and jasmine, sitting within beautifully classical structure and length. Clare Riesling doesn't get much better than this.
"Interesting style here, and while it's made the same way as the Watervale and Polish Hill, it's quite different. Vanilla and white flower perfume, citrus and cider apple, zesty character too, with a fine powdery texture, and a slightly sour-edged finish of fine length." 93 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
