Claus Preisinger has been working on the shores of Lake Neusiedlersee in Austria’s Burgenland since 2000. As part of the Austrian government’s efforts to invigorate organic farming in the area he received large interest-free government loans with which he built a state of the art winery. The area is now an organic wonderland and Claus has been a big part of that. He gives back by making this wondrful value wine for the people from prize vineyards at the northern end of the lake.
‘Puszta Libre!’ is the Beaujolais of Austria, carbonic maceration and then ageing in giant 3000L oak foudres. It is designed and packaged as a quotidien table wine, for pleasure and ease of consumption. But this is deceiving, the wine has much more than juicy fruit. There’s a skeleton of fine tannins that counterbalances the almost tart, fresh acidity. Blackcurrent-like dark brambly fruits contrast the feather lightness. A drinker AND a thinker. Serve cold with or without food.
