Jeffery Wines was born in a shed in Wimble Street Castlemaine in 2015. The aim was making wines with zero additions and as little intervention as possible, allowing grapes to steer the direction of the wines. Three vintages were made in the shed using fruit from all across Victoria; Primitive a label for purchased fruit and Jeffery Wines for fruit grown by Nick. 2018 marked a move from the humble shed to occupy a corner of the Boomtown Winemaking Co-operative just around the corner in Castlemaine. His Vermentino is sourced from Rupert’s Ridge vineyard grown on the shallower and rocky soils in the cooler Southern area of the Heathcote GI. Picked in mid-March, crushed and left on skins for 7 days in an open pot fermenter then pressed to old Barriques and left on lees for 6 months.
The wine pours a hazy, deep orange with a floral aroma mixed with preserved stone fruit, ginger, spice and stewed pear. The palate has beautiful phenolic grip with sweet fruit, quince and tropical fruit flavours. The tannins develop nicely to make this wine a spectacular accompaniment to a plethora of dishes.
