Until 2006 Philippe’s career was farming heirloom crops and heritage breed animals in Ardeche. After selling the farm and sailing around the world for 2 years, it was time to go back to the land. Philippe and his family purchased 12 hectares in Maury at the foothills of the Pyrenees and Massif Central. With strong tramontana winds and soils exclusively of schist, these are wines of freshness and minerality. Philippe farms with the soil and surrounding land being of the most important, organic farming is the only way he knows. 2017 Trinquette is mostly Grenache, supported with 20% Carignan. The fruit was destemmed, although a small portion was carbonic maceration. Philippe doesn’t want too much extraction and as such the wines are macerated for approximately 10 days. The Grenache is rested in large format old oak, the Carignan in tank, the wine blended in the Spring of 2018 prior to bottling.
The nose entices with liquorice and red fruits, you dive in and find the palate has some generosity, it slips over the tongue, the minerality bringing depth and focus. A juicy fruited, bright and fresh red for the Autumn months. Turkey with cranberry sauce will be perfectly paired with this wine.
