The winery is in Calderara of Randazzo on the spectacular northern slopes of Mount Etna. I’d argue that SRC are one of the most exciting wine producers on earth at present, not said with any hint of irony or overblown statement. Extraordinary wines have emerged from their rugged vineyard sites of Crasà, Calderara and Rivaggi. Amongst the older vines are fruit and olive trees, wild herbs, thirsty earth and tell-tale volcanic stone and remnants of lava flow. The omnipresence of the smoking Etna looms in the background of these vineyard sites of the northern slopes. Low-fi winemaking here, concrete fermenters, no additions, no filtering or fining.
Strong scents of old campfire, dark cherries, sour cherries, hot black coffee, bergamot tea and a lift of cranberry. The palate has a juiciness but tannins quickly tell you who’s boss. There’s a wash of dark, sooty fruit then an earthy corset of tannins tightens up the wine and finishes it in a gum-sticking chomp of satisfying, black tea tannins. There’s lift in fennel and wild mint-like herbal notes and a sweet-sour briary feel to close. A delicious, wonderful wine. Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
