Ognostro is Aglianico from an extremely low yielding vineyard in Montemarano Campania, the heart of the Taurasi zone. It’s the project of Marco Tinessa who grew up in the small town of Montesarchio in between Naples and this zone.
In the early 2000s, while visiting his then girlfriend and now wife in Sicily, he visited Frank Cornelissen and soon became his biggest customer in Italy. They developed a strong friendship and in 2007 decided to vinify some Aglianicotogether giving birth to Ognostro and Marco’s vision.
Post harvest in Montemarano the grapes are driven to Cornelissen’s cantina on Etna where vinification takes place. Spontaneous fermentation & indigenous yeasts is an essential part of the winemaking concept to preserve the characteristic aromas of the grape variety and vintage. He employs the use of neutral high-density polyethylene tubs so as to not affect the characteristics of the wine and the terroir. A minimum quantity of sulphur (indicated on the label) is added during bottling if necessary. Production is circa 1000 bottles. This is Aglianico like you’ve never tasted.
Intense perfume of plum, leather and spice. The tannins are strong but fine. The wine has a beautiful viscosity and length. It's so pure and fruit driven.
